Milling is processing metal, wood, or plastic by machining it using a milling tool. This is usually done on specialized tooling machines, typically a milling machine or a machining center. In contrast to turning, the cutting motion necessary to remove material is provided by rotating the cutting tool relative to the workpiece, which is clamped in a fixed position on the machine bench. The feeding motion necessary to shape the piece is provided either by moving the machine bench or by moving the milling tool around the workpiece, depending on the type of construction. Feeding motion may be in the X, Y, or Z axis, or along the respective rotational axis, depending on the type of construction, and it is also possible to combine multiple axes.
